Kathryn was my best friend in high school.    We met when I went to McKinley in 9th grade.   I had come from a Catholic school into McKinley for the last year of junior high, which was really hard because I didn't know anyone.   Kathryn befriended me and we became lifelong friends.   I actually introduced her to the person who would eventually become her husband,  Kevin Bertelson, from Racine sometime during our Sophomore year.   Kathy and Kevin were married in 1980.   They initially moved to Illinois for Kevin's work, and then settled on Scott Drive in Racine.  She was incredibly kind, thoughtful and funny.    Kathy and I would got out drinking in our early twenties on a quest to 'rid the world of Margheritas'....after all, since someone had to do it!.  One night,  we actually drank all the Margheritas at Captains Steak Joint in Kenosha, literally!   After graduation, she attended Gateway Technical institute.    She also studied to become a teacher for awhile and did some student teaching.   She worked for most of her adult life as a secretary and office administrator mostly for local trucking companies.   Kathryn was a kind soul and the workplace politics were difficult for her to deal with.     In the summer of 1994, she had been having bouts of nervousness and an inability to relax.    It was thought she was must suffering from anxiety.    She was given a clean bill of health from her doctor.     In August of 1994,  while visiting a friend in Plano, TX, Kathryn suffered a heart attack and passed away.    After her death,  they discovered most of the arteries to her heart were blocked.

There isn't a day, even 16 years later, that I dont miss her.
